It is time to give back a Little to Nature World Environment Day

Did you know…?

Each year, marine plants produce more than a half of our atmosphere’s oxygen, and a mature tree cleans our air, absorbing 22 kilos of carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen in exchange.

Since 1974, the World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on 5 June: engaging governments, businesses, celebrities and citizens to focus their efforts on a pressing environmental issue. This year the theme is biodiversity.

“Biodiversity is the foundation that supports all life on land and below water. It affects every aspect of human health, providing clean air and water, nutritious foods, scientific understanding and medicine sources, natural disease resistance, and climate change mitigation. Changing, or removing one element of this web affects the entire life system and can produce negative consequences.” UN World Environmental Day

In Baja California Sur, as of 2017, there are 13 protected natural areas, sites that are preserved from human intervention and that harbor great endemic biodiversity on land and at sea.

“According to the Environment and Natural Resources ministry (Semarnat), Baja California Sur has 414 species of birds, 359 fish, 102 mammals, 68 reptiles and five species of amphibians. In addition, there are 669 species of flowering plants, 52 of ferns and three of evergreens, as well as other plant species.” María Elena Muriel

Among the endemic flora and fauna of the region are El Cardón, Torote, Palo Verde, as well as various shrubs and mugworts. There are also numerous species of reptiles and mammals including coyotes, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, raccoons, and deer. Migratory birds such as the golden eagle and the elegant tern, the sea cock. Of course the magnificent gray, blue and humpback whales.

This world environment day test your knowledge about the planet’s biodiversity with a quiz and join the movement for nature.
